Remember a while back when I shared this Tuesday Tunes playlist with a round-up of our favorite Band of Horses tunes? Well we're back from our trip to Charlotte where we saw our favorite band play for the fourth time (and the second at The Fillmore)!
I left work around lunchtime to head home and grab a quick bite to eat, gather our bags, and pack up Aengus' things for a weekend with his cousins, Rufio and Tink(erbell). We hit the road and made it to Charlotte just in time for the rush hour traffic. Luckily it didn't slow us down too much. We stayed at the Hilton City Center. It was a great conference and event center convenient to lots of things in Charlotte like the Epicenter and Nascar Hall of Fame. Somehow we ended up in a Hilton Honor Suite with a larger room, corner bed, and a few of all the city's best skyscrapers. After dropping off our bags and changing clothes, we walked over to the Epicenter for dinner at a quick Japanese hibachi grill restaurant. We caught an Uber to The Fillmore and waited in the front of the line with the rest of the eager fans.
Security was definitely tighter than when we saw Band of Horses play at the same venue a few years back. I went through a bag search and pat-down before being wanded with a metal detector. We tend to stay away from the front of the stage in standing-room-only venues so we spotted a pole to the front left of the stage close to the bars and bathroom. The Shelters opened for Band of Horses. The group was pretty entertaining but there were times where their sound didn't really seem to fit their overall vibe. It's almost like they were still trying to commit to a genre of music. If they're having their music played on Sirius XMU they must be pretty good, though!
Since it was the second night at The Fillmore for Band of Horses, they switched up their set list a bit which worked in our favor since we've seen them several times. Ben's voice sounded really incredible! He and Tyler Ramsey sang a couple of acoustic songs and at the end of the set not only did they have three encore songs, but they brought a few crew members on stage with them to play along. On the way out the door we picked up Ryan Monroe's pick! I think I'll create a shadow box for it to hang on our gallery wall. It was definitely my favorite Band of Horses concert to date!
Afterwards we took an Uber back to the Epicenter to grab a snack at Wild Wing Cafe which was a huge mistake. There was an 80s glam band cover show and it was so loud we couldn't even hear our waitress. Just after we ordered, this guy dressed up as Sriracha sat down at our table uninvited and asked Alex to call his brother because he was drunk and didn't know where he was! Hope you made it home, Frederick! We finished our tots and wings and headed back to our hotel to change into our jammies and watch some late night comedy on tv before bed! It was a quick but successful Friday night in the Queen City!
